What do you do as an Agency Consultant at Google?

In essence, as an Agency Consultant I work together with advertising agencies in the DACH (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) market to help them devise and implement the optimal online marketing strategy for their clients based on their clients’ strategic goals and business needs.

Many students assume competitive candidates for Google must have technical skills. Would you agree with that assumption? How technical is your role? 

I think the extent to which your technical skills will be a deciding factor depends on the role. For my role it is not needed to be an engineer or to have programming skills and so on. However, it probably is important to have an affinity towards technology and a certain understanding of it in order to enjoy working for a tech company.

What was the Google recruitment process like for you?

The recruitment process was quite straightforward. There were three rounds of interviews, two over the phone and one onsite. The first phone call was just a general talk with the recruiter wherein she was trying to get a clearer picture of my previous experience as well as my interest and whether I would be suitable for the role. The second phone interview was role-specific so I had a chance to get a better understanding of that role that I applied for. The onsite interview process consisted of three more rounds where I was asked the typical questions that you expected from a company like Google. While this may sound like a lot of work, it was actually a great opportunity to get to meet more people from the team that I essentially ended up working with.

How did the MIM Program prepare you for your position at Google?

I think that the MIM Program helped me in two very distinctive ways. On the one hand you have the intense workload, high pressure and long hours before the exam week that gave me the opportunity (three times) to figure out how to work effectively under stressful circumstances. And on the other hand, I had the opportunity to meet so many extraordinary people from all around the world that gave me the chance to hone my interpersonal skills and learn about different cultures. There are many other things that I took away from my time at IE but for working in a fast-paced multicultural company, these are probably the two most important ones.

What is your advice for current MIM students who dream of working at Google?

Don’t be shy. Be bold and just reach out to people who work at Google and talk to them. They are probably the best way for you to figure out if this really would be a job you can see yourself doing as well as if this company is the right fit for you. And then, just go for it!

What do you think was the key to your successful job search?

I think your CV, experience, grades, languages and all that kind of stuff are quite important because it is what will most likely get you your initial interview and then prepare well for it. However, (now I am going to say something very cliché) I think at the end of the day when you are being interviewed it’s more important to be able to relax and be yourself. And this really is crucial because a) it obviously will help you to focus, b) you are more likely to enjoy it and your interviewer will notice that and c) you don’t want a job where you can’t be yourself anyways – so no reason to stress too much.
